LATE
UPDATE - 8/16/00
After some digging, we've confirmed that Space:
1999 is indeed coming to DVD from A&E. But there's better
news still. We've also learned that A&E has plans release several
other Gerry Anderson series on DVD next year as well, including UFO,
Stingray and The
Thunderbirds.
And in other sci-fi DVD news, we've spoken with Paramount today and
learned that the long-awaited DVDs of Star
Trek: The Next Generation episodes are definitely still on
tap. Specs and the number of episodes per disc are still being
determined, but you can look for the series to start arriving on DVD
tentatively in the 2nd Qtr of 2001.
Finally, a quick update that we posted a few days ago on the home page,
but which some of you might have missed. We've gotten word on what fans
can expect in Fox's The X-Files: The Complete
Second Season DVD boxed set (see
artwork here). It will be patterned very closely after the Season
One set, and will include The
Truth About Season Two featurette, interviews with series
creator Chris Carter, trailers for all the episodes, more deleted/unused
scenes, two more special effects clips and an interactive DVD-ROM game.
Also, we've been told that the anamorphic widescreen re-release of The
X-Files: Fight the Future will arrive on store shelves in
late December. It will have most of the same extras as the original
release, plus dual Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio tracks. Can't wait!
Stay tuned...

EARLY
UPDATE - 8/16/00
We've just gotten information that Gerry Anderson's science fiction
series Space: 1999 is going to be
released on DVD starting in January 2001 by A&E Home Video. The
1970s British series, which lasted 48 episodes, starred Martin Landau
and Barbara Bain. Its plot revolves around the struggle for survival of
the crew of Moonbase Alpha after the Moon is blown out of Earth's orbit
and sent hurtling into deep space. The series celebrates its 25th
anniversary this year, which no doubt has something to do with the
planned release to DVD. There's no word on specs, disc features or just
how many episodes will be released per disc, but we'll have details as
soon as we get them. Stay tuned...

We've been doing some digging in response to a number of reader
questions about Universal's Touch of Evil: CE
and Somewhere in Time: CE.
Specifically, people want to know which will be anamorphic. We've been
told that Touch of Evil will be
16x9, but Somewhere in Time will
feature the same letterboxed transfer that was on the movie-only
release, just with more extras.
Also, a little more on Superman.
We've been hearing two additional reasons from our sources as to why
this disc is being bumped to 2001 - a lack of replication space and a
possible theatrical re-release for the restored film. The second of
these is pretty self-explanatory, but the first - a lack of replication
space - is a major issue for a lot of studios these days. Scheduling
time for disc replication is a serious headache right now, given that so
many major titles are coming out before the end of the year. Since Superman
will be a DVD-18, and WAMO (Warner Advanced Media Operations - Warner's
choice for disc replication) has been swamped pressing Artisan's T2
DVD-18 run (among others), it's possible that not enough discs could
have been readied for a holiday 2000 release.
Stay tuned...

We've got a few big pieces of information for you today - big mostly
because these are titles you ask us about almost every day. The first is
this... Warner has decided to delay the DVD release of Superman
until next year. Before you get your red spandex underwear in a bunch
however, keep in mind that this is a good thing. It's because there are
so many cool features going into this release, that the studio needs the
extra time to pull it all together in the quality we all want to see it
in. They don't want to rush it out and have it be less than we expect.
So the delay is for the right reasons. And keep in mind also that the
title HAS NOT been officially announced. That's a point that often gets
missed these days with schedule changes for upcoming titles. Frankly,
I'm glad for the delay, because there are SO many other big titles
coming out this fall and winter, it's one less thing for people to have
to buy in such a short time. In any case, we at the Bits
say cudos to Warner for putting quality first.
The second item we have for you today is word on the specs for
Universal's Pitch Black, which
we've been talking about a lot recently. As we mentioned, the title is
expected to street on October 24th in two versions - an R-rated
theatrical cut and an Unrated Director's cut with never-before-seen
footage. Each will be priced at an SRP of $26.98. Both versions will
feature dual Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio tracks, and two separate
audio commentary tracks, one with director David Twohy and actors Vin
Diesel and Cole Hauser, and a second with Twohy, producer Tom Engelmand
and visual effects supervisor Peter Chiang. Also included will be a
making-of featurette, behind-the-scenes footage from the Raveworld.com
Pitch Black events which were held
last year in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, a DVD newsletter,
production notes, cast and filmmaker bios, a theatrical trailer and
DVD-ROM features. Should be awesome. Frankly, I can't wait to see that
opening crash scene in anamorphic widescreen with DTS sound - can you
imagine? Very cool.
Also today, Warner should release its two upcoming South
Park DVDs (The Chef Experience
and Christmas in South Park) on
November 7th. New Line has tentatively set December 19th as the street
date for their Seven: Platinum Series
2-disc set. Twin Peaks is also set
to street the same day. October 10th will see New Line release Love
and Basketball and Filth and the
Fury. And Frequency
will probably be a November release - certainly it will be out by the
end of the year.
Stay tuned...

This isn't normally the kind of news I'd post in the Rumor
Mill, since it comes straight from the studio. But as many of
these titles haven't yet been announced, I thought I'd mention them
here. The Paramount DVD insert that will be included with the upcoming
Naked Gun DVDs lists a whole bunch

not. So here they are, along with their expected ETA:

Okay... we've got unofficial street dates for you. Several sources have
reported that Ridley Scott's Gladiator
is expected on November 14th. That same day will see the release of
Paramount's Mission Impossible 2.
And a scant week later, on November 21st, Fox's The
X-Men should arrive on DVD. December or January should see
the release of DreamWorks' Chicken Run.
And don't count out Warner's Superman
as a December title either. Looks like it's going to be an EXPENSIVE 4th
quarter for DVD fans.
Now then... here are some other dates (official ones) and titles to
look for:
A&E - Monty Python's Flying
Circus: Set 7 (8/29)
Anchor Bay - Crime Story,
The Grissom Gang, Groundstar
Conspiracy, Law and Disorder,
Philadelphia Experiment and Positive
I.D. (all 9/19), Mirror, Mirror

And more news outta ComicCon - director Paul Verhoeven's Hollow
Man will include a number of highly polished deleted scenes
when the film arrives on DVD - that's according to the director himself.
Also, The X-Men DVD may include
(among other things) bloopers and outtakes which were shown at ComicCon
this weekend, including one of the X-Men running around with none other
than Spiderman. Stay tuned...

A number of retail sources have checked in today with word that they
are expecting DreamWorks' Gladiator
to street on DVD in mid-November, either the 14th or the 21st. There's
no official confirmation on this, and one isn't expected for some time.
And speaking of Gladiator, it
looks like the DVD bootleggers are active again. Several readers have
reported seeing pirate DVD and Video CD copies of the film for sale in
Asia and Chinatowns the world over. Word is that it's a camcorder
recording from a theater, and that the quality is so-so to fair. Gotta
give 'em credit though - that cover artwork is sweet. Thanks to Edwin
for the picture.
We're also hearing that Universal's Pitch
Black, which is also expected in November, will be produced
in two versions - R and Unrated. Stay tuned...

7/16/00
We've got pretty good word from our sources that Universal is prepping
a DVD release of the Back to the Future
Trilogy for January, 2001. And one of our readers in Region 2
sent over
a
scan of a "coming soon" insert that he found in his
Dutch DVD copy of Jaws. It lists a
slew of upcoming Columbia and Universal DVD titles in Region 2, and has
all of the Back to the Future
films as slated for January, along with Columbia TriStar's The
Patriot, starring Mel Gibson. Region 2 dates for new releases
are often very similar to street dates for Region 1, if sometimes a
little bit later, so it's reasonable to expect domestic U.S. releases
around the same time. Watch for official announcements in the coming
months. Thanks for the scan, Geert!
Also today, we've been told by retail sources that Fox's Titan
A.E. is slated for a November release to DVD. Stay tuned...

We've got a number of cool pieces of information for you today. First
of all, we've heard from a LOT of people who are asking about the
eventual DVD release of USA Entertainment's Pitch
Black - a very cool little sci-fi/B-grade horror flick by the
director of The Arrival. I've been
doing some digging, and I've found out that USA doesn't have it on their
release schedule. Their belief is that Universal has the home video (and
thus DVD) release rights to the title. We're waiting to hear back from
Universal for confirmation, so stay tuned.
In other news, Paramount has informed me that the Godfather
films will not be ready for release on DVD in 2000. They ARE being
prepared for the format, but there's just way too much work to be done
to get them out this year. Among the issues - which version should be
included on disc (there are TV versions of a couple of the films, which
include footage deleted from the theatrical release). So rest assured,
American Zoetrope is hard at work. Also on the Paramount side of things,
we've been told that the studio is allowing director Robert Wise to
create a new director's cut of Star Trek: The
Motion Picture specifically for the upcoming DVD. Apparently,
the director has never been happy with the film, which was rushed into
theaters before he was satisfied with some of the effects and the
editing. Should be cool.
And finally today, you may recall
a
special feature story we did recently - an interview with Roger Nygard,
one of the creators of the hit Trekkies
and the director of a new film called Six
Days in Roswell. We've been working hard to help Roger
arrange DVD distribution for Roswell,
and we're very happy to be able to announce that the film will be
released as a special edition DVD by our friends at
Synapse
this fall. It's expected to street in early November (possibly 11/1),
and will contain LOTS of great content. In addition to the film itself,
there will be a commentary with cast & crew members, some other
short films by Nygard and company, a "making of" featurette,
funny outtakes and deleted footage, Easter eggs and lots more. And if
you're a fan of Trekkies, there
will be plenty of cool things for you on this disc as well. Look for an
official announcement in about a week or so, right after VSDA. You're
gonna love this flick, and we've pretty excited that the way most of you
will get to experience it first is on a loaded special edition DVD.
Sweet!
Stay tuned...

The Digital Bits has learned that
20th Century Fox will release their 2-disc edition of The
Rocky Horror Picture Show on September 5th. Also coming on
that same day is a double-feature DVD of Voyage
to the Bottom of the Sea and Fantastic
Voyage. Their 2-disc edition of Titus
will arrive on August 15th. Columbia TriStar is prepping a DVD version
of the feel-good football classic Rudy
(YES!) for September 26th. That same day will also see Black
and White, Gladiator
(the Cuba Gooding, Jr. film) and Screw Loose.
New Line's Sympatico should arrive
on August 22nd. Buena Vista's announced Mission
to Mars for September 9th, and has confirmed the October 17th
street dates for their Toy Story/Toy Story 2
combo discs. Also look for Princess Mononoke
on August 29th. Criterion has Hamlet (1948)
and Good Morning set for August
15th. Look for Dragonheart: A New Beginning
from Universal on August 8th, with Beyond the
Mat following on the 22nd and American
Psycho and The Big Kahuna
set for the 29th. And finally, we've been hearing that DreamWorks will
roll Ridley Scott's Gladiator out
in November or December.

6/21/00
The Muppets are coming to DVD... finally. We've heard that the films
have been badly in need of restoration, but we've gotten word that the
original The Muppet Movie is
expected on DVD in January of 2001 (including interviews and other
Muppet shorts), and that The Great Muppet
Caper and The Muppets Take
Manhattan are planned for later next year. The latter title,
along with Muppets From Space,
will be available in Europe by the end of the summer.
You Transformers fans can rest
easy - we've heard that Rhino's Transformers:
The Movie will be in full anamorphic widescreen. Speaking of
Rhino, I recently picked up their H.R.
Pufnstuf and Sigmund and the Sea
Monsters DVDs, and noticed something strange - Sigmund
and H.R. Pufnstuf both contain
episodes 5-8 of each show! Rhino admitted the error to me in an e-mail,
but doesn't plan to release the first 4 episodes of either until next
year at the earliest. Even stranger, Land of
the Lost will include episodes 6-9! Why not just start with
episode 1? Hhhmmmm....
Could Fantasia 2000 be slated for
DVD this summer? That's what we're hearing from several sources. We know
that a DVD-Audio version is expected this year (pending the launch of
the format). But as far as the standard DVD-Video version, we've been
told that the retail stand-ups are done, which would mean that the disc
should be out in the next couple of months, probably August (following
the film's current theatrical re-release). And we've heard that the film
is slated for a September 18th DVD release in the UK. Stay tuned...

The Digital Bits has learned that
there's a good possibility that Paramount will be releasing The
Godfather I & II on DVD in time for the holidays. We've
also been able to confirm the street dates for Toy
Story and Toy Story 2
(see below). In light of the recent flood of Spielberg titles on DVD, we
did some digging and learned that there's still no anticipated street
date on Close Encounters of the Third Kind
from Columbia. At best it could show up in the 4th quarter, but it's
probably a 2001 title. Lawrence of Arabia
and Bridge on the River Kwai are
definitely next year. In other Columbia news, the studio is readying
another volume of Three Stooges
episodes for September. Warner is planning to release the original The
Time Machine in October. Edward
Scissorhands is a September release from Fox, and their
2-disc Rocky Horror Picture Show
DVD will arrive just in time for Halloween in October. You'll find all

Strap on yer kilts and grab your broadswords, folks! A number of
sources have checked in with word that Braveheart
will soon be officially announced for August, as we've been expecting.
There's no word yet on features, but the disc should include a brand new
anamorphic widescreen transfer and 5.1 audio. Word is there will also be
a Mel Gibson commentary track. Don't expect Paramount to call this a
special edition, but that's what it will be for all practical purposes.
Think Sleepy Hollow and you'll get
the idea. Stay tuned for an official announcement.
Also today, we've got word that Universal will soon announce more of
their Classic Monster films on DVD. August 29th should see the DVD
arrival of The Creature from the Black Lagoon,
The Phantom of the Opera (1943),
The Invisible Man and Abbot
and Costello Meet Frankenstein. That same day, Universal will
release a Classic Monsters Collection
boxed set (SRP $199.98) which will include all the new titles (save for
Abbot and Costello) along with
Frankenstein, Dracula,
The Mummy, Bride
of Frankenstein and The Wolfman
- 8 titles in all.
How's THAT for cool news for one day?

5/24/00
Hang on to your seats apes fans... Fox is releasing their 6-disc Planet
of the Apes DVD Collection on August 15th! The set will
contain all 5 of the films in the series (the original Planet
of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of
the Apes, Escape from the Planet
of the Apes, Conquest of the
Planet of the Apes and Battle for
the Planet of the Apes), as well as a 6th disc of bonus
material. All of the films will be presented in letterboxed widescreen,
but will not be anamorphic. Keep in mind that these films were mastered
and authored for DVD more than a year ago, back when Fox was still just
sort of toying with the format. In any case, we've been told that these
discs should mark the last non-anamorphic widescreen DVDs from the
studio.
Also coming soon from Fox is The Omen
Trilogy on September 5th. The three films in this series (The
Omen, Damien: Omen II
and Omen III: The Final Conflict)
will be released separately as well as in a set.
In other news, Columbia is releasing Whatever
it Takes (8/1), Mifune
and Not One Less (both 8/22).
Criterion upcoming titles include The Bank
Dick, Variety Lights
and W.C. Fields: Six Short Films
(all 7/18). And Warner chimes in with The Big
Tease (set for 7/18 as well).
Finally, Buena Vista's July DVD releases will include Alice
in Wonderland: Gold Collection, Robin
Hood: Gold Collection, Mary
Poppins: Gold Collection, Diamonds,
Down to You, Kiss
of Fire, Mansfield Park
and a Scream 3: Collector's Edition.
And among their August titles are Buzz
Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins (featuring
the voice of Tim Allen), The Cider House
Rules, The Grandfather,
Holy Smoke, Jerry
and Tom and Reindeer Games.
Stay tuned...

Word has come in that Disney and Pixar's Toy
Story 2 will be released on DVD from Buena Vista in October.
The release will be day-and-date with VHS, and will be a movie-only
edition on DVD. As is the trend with Buena Vista, you can expect a
2-disc special edition to follow a month or two later, just in time for
Christmas. The title will also continue the trend of straight-digital
transfers to DVD. And yes, Virginia... it will be in anamorphic
widescreen. FYI... the original Toy Story
is still in production for the format.

There's good news today for you fans of The
X-Files! Not only has it been announced
that
is the show expected to return for an 8th season next year, along
with stars Gillian Anderson (who is contracted for the full season) and
David Duchovny (who
Wednesday reached a deal to appear in 11 episodes)... but we've
got inside word on the next batch of X-Files
DVDs! Word has come from our sources that The
X-Files: Season Two Gift Pack on DVD is currently slated to
street on Tuesday, November 7th. And darned if
Amazon.com doesn't
agree. That's exciting, because Season Two contains several of the most
acclaimed episodes of the series, including Little
Green Men, Duane Barry,
Colony, Endgame
and Anasazi. VERY cool.
Finally, a related FYI - fans of Chris Carter's cancelled Harsh
Realm will get a chance to see (and videotape) the all 9
episodes - the entire series - on
the
FX cable network this Saturday, May 20th, starting at 5 PM PDT.
Check your local listings. And don't forget that Chris Carter's spin-off
show The Lone Gunmen will be part
of Fox's fall line-up as well.
