South Park
Volumes 1, 2 & 3
1998 (1998) - Comedy Central (Rhino/Warner Bros.)

review by Todd Doogan, special to The Digital Bits

Film Rating: A
South Park fans rejoice, your favorite foul-mouthed kids are finally on DVD! Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny are all here, packed four episodes to a disc. Rude, crude and funny as hell - kick ass!

Disc Ratings (Video/Audio/Extras): B+/B+/B
The audio is fine -- lots of noise on the 'net about a crackling sound on the disc. I didn't hear it, and I played with all three volumes on a few players. Video looks great, and the extras are the same as are on the VHS tape: intros by the boys who masterminded the show, Parker and Stone. You'll also get a commercial for Comedy Central that's pretty worthless, but it's there.

Overall Rating: B+
For what they're worth, they look great on DVD. I'm a big fan of animation on DVD. Colors are vibrant and crisp, and there aren't any commercials like you get when you tape them off TV.

Specs and Features

Volume 1: 100 mins, TV MA, full frame (1.33:1), single-sided, single-layered, film-themed menu screens, Snapper packaging, intros with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, episode access (4 chapters: Cartman Gets an Anal Probe, Volcano, Weight Gain 4000, Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride), languages: English (DD 2.0), no captions or subtitles (the packaging says Close Captioned, but they're not)

Volume 2: 100 mins, TV MA, full frame (1.33:1), single-sided, single-layered, film-themed menu screens, Snapper packaging, intros with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, episode access (4 chapters: An Elephant Makes Love to a Pig, Death, Pinkeye, Damien), languages: English (DD 2.0), no captions or subtitles (the packaging says Close Captioned, but they're not)

Volume 3: 100 mins, TV MA, full frame (1.33:1), single-sided, single-layered, film-themed menu screens, Snapper packaging, intros with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, episode access (4 chapters: Starvin' Marvin, Mecha-Streisand, Mr. Hankey: The Christmas Poo, Tom's Rhinopasty), languages: English (DD 2.0), no captions or subtitles (the packaging says Close Captioned, but they're not)

Bottom line

South Park is a funny show, and I'm glad that they're available on DVD. I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more volumes.
