And thank god for that. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is up there with Streetcar and On The Waterfront for male actors. Watching the caged lion that is Jack Nicholson strut across the screen in this film is some kind of wonderful. Nicholson plays R.P. MacMurphy, a con man of sorts, who ends up in a mental institution and does battle with authority. Classified as one of the last great films made by Hollywood, it's easy to see why it won all those Academy Awards in 1975. On DVD the picture quality is crisp and clear with very nice color. Flesh tones are well kept, and those green tiled walls will set you on edge. The sound isn't what I would call the best (you'd have to stick to the SE THX approved laserdisc for that), but it's fine for DD 2.0. Speaking of the Special Edition laserdisc, there aren't any extras here at all - which is a shame. The SE kicked some major butt, with a huge book, commentary and a documentary.
