Lean on Me
1989 (1998) - Warner Bros.

review by Todd Doogan, special to The Digital Bits

Film Rating: A
I have to admit, since I grew up in close proximity to New Jersey, I'm well versed in the legend of Joe Clark. I thought the guy was a nut job, when all of this was going on. But after watching this movie -- I was a huge fan. The movie is a minor masterpiece and a worthy addition to the filmographies of both Morgan Freeman and director John G. Avildsen.

Disc Ratings (Video/Audio/Extras): B-/C-/F
The video is clean and strong. Looks pretty good actually, but it isn't widescreen. The sound drops out a few times during some of the auditorium sequences. It ends up a bit muffled and weak. No extras, but then again -- no surprise there.

Overall Rating: B-
I love this movie. Sure, it's not, like, in my top 10 -- but on a rainy Sunday in Atlanta, it was a welcome way to spend a couple of hours whiling away the time. Should have been in widescreen through.

Specs and Features

109 mins, PG-13, full frame (1.33:1), single-sided, single-layered, Snapper case, scene access (23 chapters), language: English (DD 2.0), subtitles: English, Close Captioned

Bottom line

Morgan Freeman can do no wrong... well, outside of Amistad. Still, Lean On Me more than makes up for that. It's a brilliantly told film, that doesn't try and make a hero out of anyone -- and yet many can be found. This DVD is lackluster, but it's better than my VHS copy.
