Ladies
and gentlemen, boys and girls, step right up! Feast your eyes and
glut your souls as we bring you The 8th
Annual Digital Bits Bitsy Awards! Please do not crowd the
podium, folks... plenty of room for all! Step back, boy, ya bother
me.
Yessir, 2006 was an eventful year in the world of digital
entertainment. A certain number of early adopters chose sides in the
Blu-ray Disc vs. HD-DVD format war, a continuing digital dust-up
that so far has produced more confusion in the marketplace than
victors. Other early adopters actually chose to remain neutral for
the time being, waiting to see how the situation plays itself out
before committing to either format. We've created new categories to
honor the best work in both high-def formats this year, although
nothing would make us happier than to have to eliminate one or the
other this time next year.
Meanwhile, still others (including, arguably, nearly all mainstream
consumers) sat out the whole format war entirely, perfectly content
with the home theater experience offered by DVD. That's certainly
not a bad option for most people, although with the format entering
its tenth year, it becomes harder and harder for longtime DVD fans
to work up much excitement over it. With virtually all of the major
titles on most folks' wish lists released, studios returned to the
well repeatedly in 2006, upgrading older titles in record numbers.
Some of these re-releases were welcome upgrades. Others, most
assuredly, were not. But between the special editions that really
were something special and the release of some amazing obscurities
that we never even imagined we'd see on disc, we found more than
enough great work to honor this year. And, in honor of the 10th
anniversary of DVD (and The Digital Bits,
not coincidentally), we've even created a few new categories,
including a Special Achievement Award honoring work that has been
consistently superior for nearly the entire life of the DVD format.
And now, ladies and gentlemen, before I tell you any more, I'm
going to show you the greatest thing your eyes have ever beheld. He
was a king and a god in the world he knew, but now he comes to
civilization merely a captive - a show to gratify your curiosity.
Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...
