Okay... let's get the less controversial bit of info out of the way
first: Amazon.com has "estimated" that Buena Vista's O
Brother, Where Art Thou? DVD will street on June 12th. Now we
loved this movie, so we'll be happy if the date turns out to be true.
Stay tuned on that.
Now then... once again, the subject of Star
Wars DVDs has cropped up online with the usual endless
speculation about whether a disc IS or ISN'T coming. The
Force.net's been running overtime trying to uncover disc specs
for the yet-to-be-announced project and
Corona's
Coming Attractions has published an internal memo from
Panasonic Disc Services Corporation (PDSC) on a DVD replication project,
which is mysteriously code named "Blue Harvest".
Look... here's the deal. We've been telling you this for a long time
now. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom
Menace is currently in production for DVD release late this
year. We've said before that it would be a 2-disc set. We've said you'd
have the set in your hands in time for the holidays. The fact that a
Star Wars title is in the works
has been confirmed by Lucasfilm themselves. This statement was made by
Lucasfilm way back on April, 20th of last year (click
here to see our post from then with more detailed information):
"Yes, Lucasfilm has officially begun work on
DVDs for the Star Wars films, but it is still far too soon to know which
films will be released when and what the content will be. It is up to
George to decide the content of the discs, and they will not be released
in 2000, nor is there any firm date beyond this year."
A lot of people have been wondering why we've been so quiet about this
subject for a while. The reason is simple. The DVD IS coming. Period.
While we respect The Force.net and
Corona tremendously, there's been
enough speculation about what the discs might include to choke a Wookie
and posting stolen corporate documents probably isn't the best idea.
It's not like this is Watergate, after all. So relax. Episode
I is coming this year to DVD. The release isn't due until the
end of 2001, and even the announcement is months off. Let's just enjoy
Cleopatra, Lawrence
of Arabia, Close Encounters
and all the other great discs we'll get between now and then. And rest
assured our holidays will be spent "a long time ago, in a galaxy
far, far away..."
We hope that's enough said.

So how do you get the jump on DVD preorders for a big upcoming DVD?
Estimate a street date! Yep...
Amazon.com's
got MGM's Hannibal down as an "estimated"
10/31 release (SRP $34.98), Universal's How
the Grinch Stole Christmas is a 12/11 release ($34.98) and
Fox's Cast Away is a supposed 7/12
release ($29.99). They also have The Mexican
(10/2), Chocolat (10/30) and Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon (7/5) "estimated". Are these
even close? We'll see...
But here's something we know is certain - Paramount's got The
Elephant Man on the way, along with special editions of Forrest
Gump and the first Mission:
Impossible movie. Cool, no?

(LATE
UPDATE - 3/12/01 - 3:45 PM PST)
We've gotten word that Warner Bros will release Pay
it Forward on DVD on May 15th. New Line's Dungeons
& Dragons: Platinum Edition is slated for May 22nd. V:
The Original Miniseries and V: The
Final Battle should arrive on June 12th. And look for a boxed
set of all 4 Batman films
re-released as DVD special editions in the 4th quarter. According to
Comics2Film.com:
"The Tim Burton original, Batman, will
contain lots of extras, like additional scenes, deleted scenes,
trailers, commentary, storyboards, cast info and so on. The other movies
in the series may also be re-released, but with fewer extras. Harvey
speculates that Batman Forever may contain deleted footage as there was
an estimated one hours worth cut from the movie."
Also, the latest information we have from HBO is that The
Sopranos: The Complete Second Season is still slated for DVD
release in May. This is confirmed by
HBO's
official website for the series, which says that, "the set
will include all 2nd season episodes along with trailers and bonus
material similar to the first season set."
Stay tuned...

(EARLY
UPDATE - 3/12/01 - 1:30 PM PST)
Okay... let's catch up on some of the latest rumors. We've been able to
confirm that Close Encounters of the Third
Kind is going to be released as a 2-disc special edition on
May 29th. Much, but not quite all, of the previous laserdisc material
will be included. The set will be THX-certified and will include the
137-minute, new director's cut of the film in anamorphic widescreen.
Extras will include Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio, the 102-minute "making
of" documentary from the previous laserdisc edition, deleted
scenes, the Watch the Skies
featurette, trailers and more. SRP is slated to be $27.95. Also coming
from Columbia on June 5th are The Muppet
Movie and The Muppet's Take
Manhattan. The Muppet Movie
will include anamorphic widescreen and full frame video, Dolby Digital
5.1 audio, Jim Frawley's camera test footage, "Muppetisms" and
trailers. And finally, The House of Mirth
is slated to arrive on May 29th as well. Look for the disc to include a
director's commentary track at the least. Both House
of Mirth and CE3K
should be officially announced this week.
Also, look for Warner's V and
V: The Final Battle in mid-June.
The discs to feature anamorphic widescreen video (at approx. 1.85:1),
along with remixed audio and other bonus material.
Stay tuned...

been asking about Universal's Legend:

but I suspect you'll see it released in late summer, to coincide with
Hannibal's arrival on DVD. And

slated for 2002 release, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the
film. Stay tuned...
