Here
are a few examples of the major differences between the 1997 Special
Editions of the Star Wars
films and the new 2004 DVD Editions. This doesn't include minor
changes and sound mix changes. The 2004 DVD Edition images are on
the right.
The
Empire Strikes Back
|
As
you can see in the following shots, the old woman who played the
Emperor in Empire has been
replaced by Ian McDiarmid (who played the character in Jedi
and the recent prequels).

Return
of the Jedi
|
Luke
and Vader's lightsaber blades are now more muted in a select few
shots at the start of their fight in Jedi
for the new 2004 DVD Edition. Not for the whole fight, but just at
the start.
The
eyebrows of actor Sebastian Shaw have been erased in the new
version.
Naboo
is now included among the worlds where celebrations are shown at the
end of the film.
On
Coruscant, the Galactic Senate (see the top right image) and Jedi
Temple (the bottom right image) have been added on the horizon for
the new DVD edition.
Anakin's
Force ghost is now played by Hayden Christensen instead of Sebastian
Shaw.
