Star Wars Trilogy - 2004 DVD Changes

back to A New Hope

Here are a few examples of the major differences between the 1997 Special Editions of the Star Wars films and the new 2004 DVD Editions. This doesn't include minor changes and sound mix changes. The 2004 DVD Edition images are on the right.


The Empire Strikes Back

As you can see in the following shots, the old woman who played the Emperor in Empire has been replaced by Ian McDiarmid (who played the character in Jedi and the recent prequels).

Return of the Jedi

Luke and Vader's lightsaber blades are now more muted in a select few shots at the start of their fight in Jedi for the new 2004 DVD Edition. Not for the whole fight, but just at the start.

The eyebrows of actor Sebastian Shaw have been erased in the new version.

Naboo is now included among the worlds where celebrations are shown at the end of the film.

On Coruscant, the Galactic Senate (see the top right image) and Jedi Temple (the bottom right image) have been added on the horizon for the new DVD edition.
