The
James Bond Special Edition DVD Collection |
In
1952, a former journalist and naval intelligence officer began
writing a novel about a British Secret Service agent named James
Bond. The writer was Ian Fleming, and the novel was Casino
Royale. Several more books followed, including Live
and Let Die, Moonraker,
Diamonds Are Forever, and From
Russia With Love. Nearly a decade after Fleming began
writing Bond, film producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman
purchased the rights to adapt his sixth Bond story, Dr.
No, for the big screen. An almost unknown Scottish actor
by the name of Sean Connery was selected to play the dashing spy.
And the rest, as they say, is film history.
Connery appeared five times as Bond, before turning the role over
to George Lazenby for one film, On Her
Majesty's Secret Service (although Connery did return to
the role briefly in Diamond are Forever,
and again in the "unofficial" Bond film, Never
Say Never Again). Roger Moore took over the role in 1973,
with Live and Let Die, and
appeared seven times in all. Timothy Dalton appeared as Bond twice
(starting with The Living Daylights),
when Pierce Brosnan (then known as TV's Remington
Steele) was unable to escape his TV contract. Brosnan
finally did accept the role in 1995's GoldenEye,
and has thus far appeared in three films.

Altogether,
there have been some twenty-one Bond films - nineteen official, and
two "unofficial" films produced outside the Broccoli
domain (the other was Casino Royale,
starring David Niven as Bond). All of them have been released by MGM
on DVD. As they street, we'll post full-length reviews of each here
at the Bits, which you can
access via the menu below. Enjoy!
